Trouiblesome CA overseas ballots
Sep 25 2008, 6:03 AM EDT
It was clearly labeled "Sample Ballot" but instructed the recipient to vote either it, or the included printed ballot, if one was included in this "Early Voting" packet; the instructions also allowed that many of the "Early Voting" packets did not usually have the printed ballot. There, in fact, was no printed ballot included. There was a diagram that showed how to mark both kinds (printed and sample) of ballots, and to confirm that the ballot number, in the lower right=hand corner of the ballot, matched the number on the enclosed envelope. The one I saw was off by a digit sequence. Since we had time before the CA deadline, I advised her not to vote this, despite the instructions, and had her reregister. She now has a write-in ballot to use, and is confident that at least her vote will be registered this election. But what about the others who may be receiving this same ballot? Has anyone seen anything like this from their LA,CA members? Could these overseas voters be the target of some malevolence? One other thing that was a bit odd, was that the words "General" in the "General Election" in the second line, was mispelled. I am not an alarmist, but we certainly can't afford anything to compromise the overseas CA vote. Do you find this valuable? |

3. Updates ...

I contacted Kim Alexander of CalVoter, who said"The ID number and spelling error are potentially quite significant and may indicate that there was a bad batch of ballots that went out, and help trace the problem. This, unfortunately happens sometimes (I wouldn't say all the time, though), and it is not necessarily a sign of something nefarious going on. Whatever details you can get, gather them and get them to me and/or the county elections office asap. I know the counties had to mail out the overseas ballots quite early, and at a time when the legislature was messing around with changing Prop 1 to Prop 1A related to the budget negotiations, so it is possible there was a glitch in the production process of those early ballots." Once we get the details, the next step is to contact Debra Bowen's office. jon PS: Linnie Rawlinson mentioned this investigation in http://inthefield.blogs.cnn.com/2008/09/26/voting-activists-fight-voter-suppression-with-wiki/ Do you find this valuable? |
