ACORN, which is accused of all kinds of voter fraud is supposedly out there helping to get minorities registered, but then the VA is blocking voter registration for wounded (disabled) vets in VA facilities? What a messed up country! What group would be more in need of someone coming to register them then disabled veterans? Really, anyone who is disabled or in a nursing home or physical rehab. facility should be given this consideration.

I was sure there would be comments here on Atty Gen Holder dismissing charges that the BP tried to suppress voters last fall in PA> or did I miss the coverage here? If you are going to seriously help the situation, you must discuss the consequences handed out or the lack thereof.

THE OAKLAND POLICE ARE TRYING TO SUPPRESS THE MINORITY VOTE The Oakland Police are stopping all cars with minorities in them and holding them for no reason for extended periods of time. I have never seen so many cops stopping so many cars except for at times when drunk driving is of great concern, such as on New Years Eve or St. Patrick's Day. In the span of three blocks, I saw a dozen cars, all with African American or Latino drivers being stopped for no apparent reason. As soon as I and my companion commented on how strange it was that so many people were being stopped, we were pulled over as well. (My companion, the driver, is African American.) There was absolutely no ground for the police pulling us over, and they held us on the side of the road for almost 30 minutes, although they eventually let us go without issuing a citation (because we hadn't done anything!!!). While we were waiting, I saw another four cars being pulled over, again for no apparent reason. I was mystified as to why the cops were doing this, until I realized that it must be an attempt to keep minorities from making it to the polls. Luckily, my companion and I were leaving the poll when we were pulled over having already voted. However, we both work and go to school. We had carved out a particular time in the day where we could go vote. If the cops had stopped us on the way to the polls, we could very likely not have had time afterwards to vote. I have no doubt that some of the people who are being stopped may be thus prevented from making it to the polls. This is absolutely egregious behavior by the Oakland Police Department to suppress the minority vote. I was appalled.

I knew the elections are over. But I received information from Progress Ohio that I wanted to post here in case people want to reference it for the future. Voting rights are under attack again in Ohio. A House vote is expected early this week on Senate Bill 380. The bill would:
Create a more complex deadline structure for early and absentee voting Force boards of elections to use error-prone government databases for all new registrations Allow partisan operatives to challenge and discard absentee ballots for purely technical reasons

We were poll watching in Nevada. Las Vegas. It was pretty quiet at our polling place. What the attorney's noticed there were many poll workers that would tell voters they couldn't vote at this particular place. Crazy! They didn't even offer a provisional ballot. I believe after we all talked to the disgruntled voters they did either do a provisional ballot or go to the place they were supposed to be voting. Some people didn't want to take up more time and just wanted to do the provisional. One of our guys drove voters to the correct place. We had a couple from Fla that registered in Fla, moved to Nevada two weeks ago and wanted to vote. Finally they were given a provisional ballot, but would it even count? We didn't think so.

KBOO, a radio station of Portland, OR reported last week of similar operations conducted in Ohio during the last election. Given the importance of PA, it sounds like the same old thing from GOP fascists -- lie, cheat, and steal to win. Of course, Yahoo is reporting "few problems." Hmmm....

In September I went to get my address changed on my license and to register to vote at the Department of Driver Services, Norcross, GA. I must have told the woman that waited on me about a half of dozen time to register me to vote, which she assured me she did. On Nov. fourth when I went to vote I was told that I was not register. The woman at the voting center told me that they have had over 200 complaints from DMV registered voters that they were not registered. The woman at the voting center told me to go back to the DMV Center and complain. Nothing was resolved. I did not get to vote that day!!!!!! I am very angry that DMV has taken away my right to vote!!!!! I can understand one or two mistakes, but over 200!!!!! Is this profiling?????

This is also happening in Virginia. My husband when he got his license he also got registered and the lady said he was. When he went to vote he was not allowed to vote because they said he wasn't registered. Right after this we met another person with the same problem. Yes I believe something crooked is going on or went on.

I was nearly turned away because of a clerical error in my voter registration. My husband and I moved to Washington state in August, and immediately we registered to vote. It took nearly three months of phone calls, re-registering, and error correction on the part of Pierce County, however, to get us registered. We originally requested to vote at the polls, but our first set of registration cards indicated that we would be voting absentee. I called the county auditor's office to correct the information, and they assured me that the system had been updated and we would receive new cards. The new cards came, but a few days later, absentee ballots arrived in the mail. Again, I called the county auditor to report the error. They told me that the system was correct, that we were to vote at the polls, and that we were to shred the absentee ballots. Today, we showed up at the polls, waited in line for over 90 minutes to vote, but when our turn came we were not allowed to vote because their records showed that we were to vote absentee. They tried to make us fill out provisional ballots, but we refused: we wanted to take zero chances with risking our ballots being rejected. I told them that I had called the county and had been told to vote at the polls. Their answer: "Well, that just means that you could vote at the polls with provisional ballots." Nobody ever told us that bit of information! I'm not sure if that answer was true or not. So we asked if we could still mail in the absentee ballots, which we hadn't gotten around to shredding yet. They said yes, as long as they were postmarked today. So in the end, we were able to vote, but the fact that registration and voting was so difficult and fraught with misinformation and incompetence is appalling.

I know of quite a few people who were arrested monday and over the weekend for traffic tickets. My girlfriend son is 19 and this is his first time voting, well it would have been. The police came to his job to lock him up for a traffic ticket and he cannot get out until he is seen in court. So even if he posted his $5,000 bail he wouldn't be let go. All this over a $135 ticket from 9 months ago. He says most everyone in the holding is around his age and in for the same thing. He lives in Carmel Indiana but the same thing happen to my friend who lives in Ft.Wayne Indiana..How sneaky is that.

I am a first-time voter who registered in Fulton County, GA; mailed my registration and had it postmarked by the deadline. This morning I contacted the Fulton County Election Office to verify my registration status. I was told that yes, I was registered, and given the polling location (which I already knew from looking it up beforehand, but I wanted to verify with them.) When I arrived at the polling location, I was not found in their system. The manager of the polling location looked on her various other lists and I was on none of them. She tried to call some phone number to have it verified but after 5 minutes stated that it was too busy for her to get through the line. I was forced to vote provisional and was extremely unhappy about it. I went home, but then went back with my father and complained. They were apologetic this time and gave us some phone numbers to call. After I got home again, I was more angry and left a message with CNN's voter complaint hotline (1-877-462-6608), and contacted the election office again, who once again confirmed to me that I was registered. Unfortunately since I had already cast my ballot, there was nothing I could do to change it.
The current voting system is messed up. How can I be in the actual county's database but not in the polling location's? It is an inferior, backwards system that needs rehauling. The polling location I was at was not even busy at all, but I saw that other provisionals had been cast before I had gotten there, so others probably went through the same crap.
Also, though it may be irrelevant, the poll location manager was rather unhelpful and condescending to me, and also seemed to hint that I registered too late, though I know I registered before the deadline.
I'm extremely unhappy with my first voting experience.

Fulton, I can understand how you feel. I've voted before and I had the same experience. I moved to Seattle, WA from another county in the state, electing to vote by permanent absentee (mail-in) ballot. I got a voter registration card and verified it on-line. I should have gotten a ballot in the mail for the primary but didn't. I went to the polling place and they couldn't find my name, neither on the signature list nor their "master list." I voted by provisional ballot, and later verified it got counted (at least they said so on-line).
Today, the same thing happened. No ballot in the mail, Not listed on their lists. Had to vote provisional. Angry? Yes. My guess is my old county is slow to remove my name from their list, so my new county is forcing a provisional ballot just in case I vote up there. If true, they could, no SHOULD, let me know what was going on.
No matter the reason, I can see how a new or less inclined voter could be turned off by the process. Provisional ballots are a REAL HASSLE. Now I really understand voter suppression.

Went to vote at PS 382 in Brooklyn NY at 6:15am.
Two for four machines were broken, and they didn't appear to have the book listing registered voters. Everyone coming from my neighborhood was directed to fill out an affidavit ballot. There was no way on the form to indicate a broken machine, so we were instructed to check the box saying that our names weren't on the list of registered voters, but we swear we did register. They said our votes will count the same as if we'd used the machine.
