Enjoy the food and wine of the Puglia region of southern Italy. Easily accessable via Bari or Brindisi airports the region is often overlooked. Arrival into Alberobello to stay in the world renowned trulli is like arriving into a dream world of tiny houses. This UNESCO world heritage site is worth visiting. The Puglian food called ?cucina povera’ is unpretentious, cooked simply and served much as you would at home, using ingredients that are either home grown or gathered wild. The olive oil is added to everything and of course washed down with local wines. The limestone soil provides enough nourisment for olives, almonds and vines. In fact Puglia accounts for 20% of the wine production of Italy. On my first evening, I ventured into the restaurant La Locanda di Don Beverley Restaurants Antonio in Via Giove. To start I chose the local speciality – ear shaped pasta with rocket salad and shards of the local cheese. I was tempted for my main course into having the lamb cutlets. They were well cooked and rolled in breadcrumbs. The portions were all of a good size and all went down a treat. What made the meal extra special was the ambience of the converted stables. The mangers along each side wall are now home for wine racks and not hay.The attentive service of was excellent. Roberto runs the front of house and his brother Massimo is chef. With water, wine and coffee the total bill was Euros 20 . For quality food, great service, I can recommend it.I was also lucky enough to meet Don Antonio too – the father .Well worth visiting if you are in Alberobello.
